NILES TOWNSHIP (WKZO) -- While questions still swirl as to why a Niles teenager may have shot his grandfather, the young suspect has been formally charged. Berrien County Judge Scott Schofield set bond at $100,000. Fourteen -year-old Dakotah Eliason appeared in court by video conferencing from the Berrien County Juvenile Center Monday.
The prosecutor's office is charging Eliason as an adult with Open Murder. Michigan State Police say Eliason shot 69-year-old Jesse Miles in the head at 3120 Niles-Buchanan Road early Sunday morning. Miles later died at the Saint Joseph County Medical Center in South Bend. If convicted, Eliason could face life in prison without parole. Eliason's preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 16th.
